Lina Mayfleet is a female human and the main protagonist of The Books of Ember.

In the 2008 film, she was portrayed by Irish actress Saoirse Ronan.

Description[]

Lina is slender, and has long dark hair.[1]

When she first appeared, she wore a ragged cape and loose socks which slid down her feet.[1]

Personality[]

Lina is quite a kind and well-mannered young woman, as well as a loyal and good friend to many. Throughout her life, she has shown that she is an individual who enjoyed helping others, and she, along with her good friend Doon Harrow, managed to save the citizens of Ember countless times. Lina Mayfleet dislikes fighting as shown a couple of times and she definitely does not enjoy being yelled at; she wants to be respected and accepted by others.

Of course, like all people, Lina has her flaws; like Doon, she has an obsession with adventure, and will go to great lengths to get it, which occasionally causes her to act foolishly. Lina has also demonstrated that she is quick to jump to conclusions and act too quickly on her instincts, not caring to judge the consequences of what might happen.

Lina has a fondness for drawing along with an amazing and sometimes overactive imagination. Several times while living in the City of Ember, she has drawn various pictures of a city from her dreams that is unlike anything that anyone in Ember has ever seen. Lina loves to run as it makes her feel free, this feeling of freedom caused her to desire to be a Messenger, this trait is again later shown when she receives her horse, Fleet. Lina has a natural curiosity, and once she's set her mind to accomplish a certain goal, there is no stopping her.

Lina has always shown that she loves her family and friends dearly and whole-heartedly, she is constantly there to help them when necessary. She is especially fond of Poppy, Doon, Granny, Mrs. Murdo, and Loris Harrow. However, she is also good friends with Clary Lane, Maddie, Lizzie Bisco, Hester Crane, Torren Crane, Kenny Parton, Vindie Chance, and Orly Gordon.

History[]

Pre-Series[]

Lina is an orphan, raised under the care of her grandmother, known as "Granny," by her. Lina's mother died giving birth to Lina's younger sister Poppy Mayfleet, and her father later died as well due to an unknown illness.

The City of Ember[]

In Chapter 10, Granny dies, either due to the dreaded "coughing sickness" or finally succumbing to her mental illness, leaving Lina and Poppy completely alone. They are brought into the care of Evaleen Murdo, a neighbor and friend of the family. With Doon's help, Lina finds a way to escape Ember, and they find a tunnel that stops directly above the city, where Lina adds to the note Doon had meant to send to Clary Laine, then they stuff it and a rock into Doon's shirt and drop it out of the tunnel, letting Mrs. Murdo find it.

Film[]

Lina is an orphan, along with her younger sister, Poppy Mayfleet. They live with the care of their grandmother (known as ‘Granny’ in the movie). Her mother died giving birth to Poppy and their father died trying to leave Ember.

On the day the world ended, the fate of mankind was carried in a small metal box. In a secret location, architects, scientists, and engineers met and concluded that there was only one hope for our future: to build an underground city designed to keep its citizens protected for generations to come. The city would be powered by a generator and made of thousands of lights.

The box was set for 200 years and once the countdown ends, the box would click open. The box was entrusted to the first mayor, who was to pass it on to her successor. As the years counted down, the box passed from mayor to mayor. None knew what secrets it held, only that it would open when it was needed most. But fate ran another course, and the chain was broken. The box was tucked away and forgotten, and as the city grew old and began to crumble, the box quietly clicked open.

On assignment day, Lina was given the job of a pipe worker and Doon is given the job of messenger, but Lina traded jobs with Doon and becomes a messenger instead.

Near the middle of the movie, Poppy finds the box in their wardrobe and opens it. Lina soon finds out that the box has instructions to exit the City of Ember. She tells Doon and they try to find out what it means.

During the movie their grandmother died, and the girls are given to Evaleen Murdo, a family friend and neighbor.
